This reproductive health training manual was developed in the Asian Region by the UN Population Fund but is applicable world-wide in a broad range of development training programs dealing with interpersonal communication. The primary audience of the training program is service providers and IEC (information, education, communication) personnel working in health programs, especially those concerned with reproductive health (RH) and family planning (FP). The 9-day training course consists of 9 modules containing a total of 30 activities and encompassing 38.5 training hours. Module 1 introduces the training design and methodology and allows participants to agree on training expectations, objectives, and outputs. Module 2 explains the concept and key elements of RH and provides: suggestions for integrating RH into FP programs; ways to counteract misconceptions about FP, sexual practices, pregnancy and childbirth, and HIV/AIDS; and updated information on contraceptives. The third module discusses the stimulants that induce behavior change and how they can be applied to FP programs to reduce gaps in knowledge, attitude, and practice. Module 4 consists of exercises to improve the basic interpersonal communication skills of probing, listening, observing, and telling (PLOT).

Module 7 presents approaches to groups communication by considering groups dynamics and group facilitation, and module 8 deals with one-on-one interaction through a look at the concept of focused dialoguing. The final module reviews all aspects of counseling and gives participants the opportunity to practice and demonstrate counseling skills.
