A good start for the absolute basics is Paul Teller's book - it is free, and has an answer manual for all the exercises - which is somewhat of a rarity. If you get through that and what to continue, check out, it has a great guide (aimed at philosophers, though) for self learners, complete with tips on how to develop yourself in different areas of logic. I endorse his recommendation of Chiswell and Hodges 'Mathematical Logic' to get you started in a more formal approach to the subject. Good luck with it, and don't lose heart if it takes a while to stick, especially once you make the leap from real beginner stuff to more mathematically orientated texts. It is worth the effort, logic is totally fascinating, from philosophical, mathematical, and other points of view.
