Premier Swather Operators Manual
Posted By admin On 01.02.20I know guys will laugh, but I have cut all my canola for many years with a 1900 premier pull type. Valued at maybe about 5 grand. You just need to cut as high as possible. You have automatic auto guide for free with the swather. Sure a guy gets a few lumps, but once you get the height set, your good to go. I regularly grow canola to 5 and 6 feet high: you just cut higher then.
I do not yet have a shear on the end, that would make it hassle free indeed, but I lack the extra hydraulics to run it, so have been getting by without. Most guys are to0 uppity, or 'better than that', when it comes to a pull type.
Some of us can live with economic principles. I have one neighbor who as he stood at the edge of the field with my buddy, chuckled out loud at the ridiculousness of a pt swather, as i cut my 50 bushel tangled mess. Meanwhile, he was done swathing his 24 bushel erect crap, with his 80 000 dollar machine. I know guys will laugh, but I have cut all my canola for many years with a 1900 premier pull type.

You're right.once you get it set just right and think 'slow and steady', it lays a very nice swath. We now run two second hand SP swathers now but still have a 30' PT Hesston for a back-up.
The price of new SP swathers is ridiculous. We plan on desiccating and straight cutting more canola this year as it worked very well last year. Perhaps one day, swathing will be a thing of the past. I too swath with a Mac Don pull-type (590 JD). I had one field last year that got 6 (or more) feet tall and the pull-type wouldn't do it. I couldn't go 8 feet without being plugged up. I was cutting very high and no matter what I did, I couldn't make it work. I ended up renting the neighbour's 220 and it worked like a dream.
That being said, I plan to continue cutting my canola with the pull-type. I added a pick-up reel, going to add a sabre-shear, and I'm paying closer attention to varieties that will not get as rank.
